The Tarsal Tunnel

The Tarsal tunnel is a fibro-osseous tunnel in the foot, posterior and inferior to the medial malleolus. Its boundaries include: a flexor retinaculum as a roof; medial aspect of the talus, distal tibia and calcaneum on its floor. The retinaculum also spans the tunnel inferiorly and superiorly. This tunnel also have clinical significance as the compression of the branches of the Tibial nerve passing inside the tunnel – the Medial and Lateral plantar and the Calcaneal nerve – can result in the Tarsal tunnel syndrome (18).
